A Double-Chin can have a significant impact on your self-confidence, detract from your appearance, and create insecurity having your picture taken. Known clinically as Submental fullness, the double-chin can result from genetics, age, and/or overall weight gain that causes fat to deposit in the skin under the chin. Often this area is unresponsive to dieting and exercise, and surgical treatments are often invasive and limited. Fortunately Kybella is a permanent, non-surgical FDA-approved treatment for submental fullness. It is your alternative to invasive surgical procedures to correct your double-chin.
Is Kybella® Right For You?
What Is Kybella®?
Kybella's active ingredient is a synthetic version of a naturally occurring bile salt normally produced in the liver called deoxycholic acid. It's role is to facilitate the breakdown and absorption of dietary fat. Therefore when Kybella is injected into the fat under the chin, the fat cells are permanently destroyed the fat is eliminated by the body.
What Does Kybella® Treatment Involve?
Your Kybella treatment will consist of several 15-30 minute sessions during which Kybella is injected throughout the fatty area under the chin. Anywhere from 15 to 20 injections are given during a session, and each session is scheduled 1 month apart. Cold packs and topical anesthetic are provided to help with any potential discomfort during an injection session. Typically most post-op swelling and bruising occurs after the initial session, with significantly less after subsequent sessions. The majority of patients will notice a more defined jaw-line and improved contour to their profile after only two to four sessions. A total of six may be needed to achieve maximum aesthetic results.
Recovering After Kybella® Treatment
Each treatment session takes 15 - 30 minutes, after which you should expect minor swelling, bruising, numbness, or sometimes stinging. This can last anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour. Post-op symptoms are typically most significant after the first treatment session, and are significantly reduced after subsequent treatment sessions. However there is a risk of prolonged symptoms, lasting a few days to a few weeks.
Can I Return to Work After Kybella®
Since Kybella is a non-surgical, minimally invasive treatment, treatment sessions are relatively short, lasting 15 - 30 minutes. Post-op symptoms of bruising, mild-pain, swelling, or stinging sensation are normal, and often resolve within a few hours to days, therefore you may want to arrange a day or two off of work after your Kybella session.
What Are the Significant Risks of Kybella®
Aside from the common post-op symptoms of swelling, pain, numbness, bruising, stinging, or hardness in the treatment area, there are some significant potential risks. Although Kybella is non-surgical, minimally invasive, the activity of deoxycholic acid can cause complications if not injected correctly. In addition to destroying fat cells, deoxycholic acid can also destroy neighboring skin cells, leading to ulcerations and open sores. Therefore it is important to receive your Kybella treatment from a provider well trained and experienced with head and neck anatomy and knowledgable in proper delivery of Kybella.
